Heat pump or gas furnace in Fresno
The honest comparison, including the cases where a heat pump is the wrong answer and nobody in the industry wants to say so.
Most of what we install now is heat pumps. That is not advocacy, it is what the numbers say in a climate with long cooling seasons and mild winters. But there are houses where a gas furnace is still the better buy, and the industry has become oddly quiet about which ones.
What a heat pump is
The same machine as your air conditioner, running backwards in winter. Instead of burning fuel it moves heat from outside to inside, which is why it can deliver more energy than it consumes. Below about 20 degrees the older models lose capacity badly; the current generation holds usable output far lower.
Where a heat pump wins here
- You already need to replace the air conditioner. The heat pump is the same box, so the marginal cost of heating capability is small.
- You heat with electric resistance today. The running cost typically falls by half or more.
- You have solar. Heating with your own generation changes the arithmetic completely.
- Your gas line or flue needs work. Removing the combustion appliance removes that cost.
Where a gas furnace still wins
- Your furnace is failing but the air conditioner is young and healthy. Replacing a working condenser to gain a heat pump rarely pays back.
- Your electrical panel is full. A panel upgrade can add several thousand dollars and it is not always disclosed in the quote.
- You genuinely need high output fast, as in a large, leaky, poorly insulated house.
Dual fuel, which is what we fit most often
A heat pump for the mild majority of the winter, with a gas furnace that takes over on the coldest mornings. The control switches on outdoor temperature. You get the running cost of the heat pump for most hours and the output of the furnace when it actually matters. It costs more to install than either alone.
The question to ask about any quote
Ask for the running cost estimate at your own utility rate, not the national average. A quote that compares equipment on efficiency ratings alone is comparing laboratory numbers. What you pay is a function of your rate structure, your load and your thermostat habits.
